Life can get busy … especially with the holidays right around the corner! Paper and information fly into our homes at what feels like warp speed some days – bills, homework, invitations, sports calendars, coupons, and so much more. It’s easy to let important deadlines slip through the cracks if we’re not careful.
Did you know that 23% of adults pay bills late and incur fees because they can’t find their bills according to the market research and consulting firm, Harris Interactive? One simple way to reduce stress and stay on top of these deadlines is to create a family command center.
Let’s Get Started!
A Winning Strategy
We built this command center for Indy’s 2020 Home-A-Rama around a busy family with three young children. Naturally, the family’s command center became a one-stop-drop for every category of paper or information going in and out of the house.
Finding just the right organizing products was a challenge, but a fun one, requiring some creativity and a little spray paint! We opted for neutral colors and natural materials to match the decor and design theme of the home.
-
Wall pockets hold files for each child’s important papers and for household management action items labeled “To Do” “To Pay” and “Hold”
-
A custom mail station helps the family keep up with to-do lists and thank-you notes … no more excuses!
-
Letterboxes speak to the “pilers” in the household to discretely hold mail and documents that need to be filed … The good news is that their capacity is self-limiting so they’ll get your attention on a regular basis if they fill up
-
We just love a linen board with clean, simple lines for a family calendar, backyard barbeque invitations and the like
- And last but not least, a contemporary lamp and a comfy chair. These were just for fun to make the area warm and inviting!
Tips for Success
-
Calendars and to-do lists
-
Bills and mail
-
Homework and other kids’ paperwork
-
Activities and sports
-
Communications
-
Who is it for?
-
What is it? What do I need to do with it?
-
When do I need to act?
-
Make it convenient – where paper comes in and out or where it’s processed.
-
Ensure it’s easy for everyone in the family to access.
- You need to love your space! Ensure you visually enjoy looking at your command center.
-
Measure twice, buy once.
-
Take note of whether you are a “piler” or a “filer” or a little bit of each. Pilers like to stack papers and deal with them later; filers like to put them into categories right away.
-
Do your research to find product options that fit your space and budget.
-
Colors and patterns can enhance your home’s decor.
-
A statement lamp or chair add meaningful style.
-
Plants and accessories bring life to the space.
